Part Two: Fashion In Film And Tv

Part Two:

This week is a continuation of our discussion in the office about fashion in some of our favourite series or films.

Sex and the city:

Sex and the City is a favourite show of ours here in the office as we have all watched it and it’s known for its portrayal of four best friends in the Big Apple and of course, the fashion. The show was first shown in 1998 and continued to run until 2004 before it was followed later on with two movies, which were just as fashionable. What I love most about the fashion in the show is the fact that for a lot of the looks, I can see them being popular and worn today. It just goes to show how some of the pieces are timeless and will never go out of style.

I like all of the characters in the show, but I’d have to say my favourite and the person who I think is the best dressed is of course, Carrie Bradshaw. What I love about the outfits that she wears is that she is able to wear anything and she looks great in it. The outfits aren’t all the same and she isn’t afraid to try any kind of style, which is something that I would like to do myself.

Clueless:

Although the movie Clueless is not a TV show, it is definitely worth a mention because of its impact on fashion on the runway as well as with trends and high street brands. Clueless has been a favourite film of mine for a while now and I definitely think it’s one of those movies that everyone should’ve at least watched once. It is an iconic movie from the 90’s and the outfits have definitely served as an inspiration for other more recent trends. I’ve definitely wished that I had Cher Horowitz’s (Alicia Silverstone) wardrobe and the outfit matcher that comes with it. One of the most popular looks from the film is the yellow plaid two piece that Cher can been seen wearing in the photos below. Female rapper Iggy Azalea wears a copy of it in one of her music videos and many people have recreated the outfit for Halloween.

Trends are always changing and coming back and one of the popular ones is the fashion from the 1990’s, which is the time in which this movie was released. You can see a lot of young women these days trying to replicate the style of the 90’s, I myself have even had an interest in it because of how cute yet stylish the clothes are. You are able to walk into many high street brand stores and you will for sure see clothes that definitely look like they’ve almost come straight out of the movie itself. The 90’s is a constant source of inspiration for many designers.

Gossip Girl:

Another one of my all-time favourite TV shows is Gossip Girl which was first aired in 2007 and went on until 2012. Much like Dynasty, whenever I’ve watched the show, I’ve spent most of my time studying the characters outfits and watching the fashion develop over the course of the show. I think it’s a great show to watch for this reason as you can see quite a difference in the styling between the start of the show and when it ended. The show was also a way for brands to advertise their clothing to the viewers and you were able to buy the clothes in the episodes on the Gossip Girl website.

I think the fact that you were able to purchase the clothes worn in the show directly from the website was a really cool idea because I often find myself wishing that I could buy certain clothes from TV shows but then not knowing where to get them from. Also during the last season of Gossip Girl, Blake Lively (who plays protagonist Serena Van Der Woodsen) was being sent Couture from Paris because the brands wanted her personally to wear their clothes. Blair Waldorf and Serena Van Der Woodsen are by far two of the most stylish on the Upper East Side.

Some of the brands clothes that can be seen in the show are: Zuhair Murad, Elie Saab, Oscar De Le Renta, Peter Pilotto, Jenny Packham, Dior, Giambatistta Valli, Ralph Lauren and many more.
